Moving Day Checklist
A few weeks before you move
Don’t wait until the last minute to hire a moving company. They can fill up quickly, so book your move well in advance.
To ensure a clean and fresh start in your new home, consider scheduling a cleaning service to come after the movers have finished.
To avoid disruptions, ensure your utilities are transferred or disconnected and reconnected on time. Some companies can have long wait times, so plan ahead. If possible, schedule cable/Internet installation for the day after your move to avoid conflicts with the moving process.
Gather your packing supplies. Look for free boxes from friends or local stores, and then purchase any additional tape and paper you need.
Get a head start on packing. Begin with items you won’t need anytime soon, like books, winter clothes, and holiday decorations. Aim to pack consistently, whether it’s a few boxes a week or a day, to avoid feeling overwhelmed closer to your move.
A day before you move
To ensure a smooth move, clearly label all your boxes with the corresponding room in your new home. You can also use stickers or masking tape on furniture to indicate your desired placement.
To fuel yourself and your movers during the move, be sure to have plenty of bottled water, drinks, and healthy snacks on hand.
Prepare to tip your movers by withdrawing some cash in advance. This will make the payment process smoother.
To ensure your pet’s safety and comfort during the move, consider boarding them or leaving them with friends or family the night before.
To make your first night in your new home as smooth as possible, pack an overnight bag with essential items like clothes, medicine, electronics, chargers, and toiletries. This will save you time and energy.
The day of the move
Get a good night’s sleep and wake up well before your movers are scheduled to arrive. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and use the quiet time to mentally prepare for the busy day ahead.
To ensure the safety of your most valuable items, consider transporting highly breakable items, jewelry, and important documents in your locked vehicle. Park your car in a secure location where you can keep an eye on it.
Before you leave, take care of last-minute items like toiletries, yard waste, and perishable food. If you can’t put your trash out for collection yourself, arrange for someone to do it for you.
During your final walk-through of your old home, thoroughly check all cabinets and drawers to ensure you haven’t left anything behind.
Supervise the movers to prevent damage to your items. Notify them of any tight corners or hallways beforehand.
Once you arrive at your new home, label any rooms that might be confusing to the movers. This will help ensure your belongings are placed in the correct rooms.
